[In 1951-’52] “Albion College had a show of German Expressionists. . . I thought basically that anything that wasn’t pretty much a literal copy of nature wasn’t art. When I saw the German expressionists –I thought “my people.”

I felt freed by it. To try whatever I wanted to try, and at that point, it was extremely emotional and really powerful.”
